Making Rural Holiday Homes Fit for The Future

Case Studies

One extensive farming estate in the rolling countryside of Lincolnshire turned to Navien UK as part of their goal to become a go-to destination for UK holidaymakers seeking a quiet, green getaway out in the country.

As the world is becoming more and more eco-conscious, there has been a rise in eco-holidays. The British countryside has become the perfect place for modern eco-rentals, lodges and cabins that offer more sustainable experiences, while allowing holidaymakers to immerse themselves in the natural world.

A smarter solution for more sustainable staycations.

This Lincolnshire estate includes several rural properties refurbished with this green purpose in mind – including a recently completed barn and farmhouse annexe. The owners were facing the challenge of retaining the character of these buildings while bringing them up to date in terms of heating and hot water comfort for guests. Just as important was efficiency and reliable performance – all while enhancing the sustainability of the heating system across the properties.

Each rental property was built with a focus on aesthetics and comfort, but the striking design also had to blend in with the rural setting. Each property also needed to maximise both desirability for guests and commercial viability for the owners.

Working with an expert local installer, it was decided that the best solution for the challenge was to install the Navien LCB700 Blue Flame HVO-ready oil boiler, coupled with an HVO tank, across both finished properties.

HVO oil only container

Key to this decision was its compatibility with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a fuel source: a key solution for more sustainable living, and ideal for the estate’s rural location and high demands, particularly given the ease of transition from conventional fuels.

The choice of the HVO-ready LCB700 boiler was an easy one for the owners, who were happy to continue with the existing boiler technology they knew, but with a next-generation twist. A safe bet for the owners as they weren’t ready to take the plunge on heat pump technology.

Alongside HVO compatibility, the LCB700’s future-proof Blue Flame technology, which delivers superior efficiency and ultra-low NOx emissions, was added as a future-proof option for the properties. Meanwhile, its space-saving design minimised any intrusion on the buildings’ aesthetics, while its lightweight construction made installation easier and more flexible for the engineers.
