In March 2021, the owners of Dewsall Court, a 17th-century estate, approached BoilerHut with a challenge. While Dewsall Court is best known as a wedding venue, it’s also a fantastic space for business events, product launches, creative workshops and wellness activities.

Following an exceptionally busy post-pandemic wedding season and faced with specific heating requirements, Dewsall Court needed a reliable and efficient boiler system to ensure year-round comfort for their guests.

The venue features a vast flooring plan and a wide variety of rooms, including an after-party den and bar, kitchens, a chinoiserie room, a study, a billiard room, five bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and two converted barn bedrooms.

Although the venue’s existing 14-year-old oil boiler was suitable for their needs at the time of installation, it was no longer working efficiently, costing the venue a substantial amount of money in oil bills each year.

The Solution

To accommodate their diverse needs – from providing heating and hot water for 27 overnight guests to hosting events for up to 170 people – a specialised solution was required.

After considering two other boiler brands, BoilerHut recommended installing three Navien LCB700 Blue Flame Oil Regular Boilers in a parallel boiler system, offering several advantages over a traditional single-boiler replacement, including:

Size

The old system was very large and heavy, weighing just under 300kg, making it very difficult to maintain and service in the event of a breakdown. Such a large unit being in the cellar also posed problems with the installation; manoeuvring a boiler of that size into place could have damaged both the boiler and the historic property itself.

Navien’s LCB700 boilers weigh from 67kg each, so installation was much more manageable, and the location no longer posed such a challenge.

With a class-leading flue length of up to 20 metres and an IPX 5 rating, the Navien LCB700 Blue Flame Regular Boiler is versatile when it comes to the installation location. This meant that it was a great choice for installing in the cellar of Dewsall Court.

Unique Needs

As the venue has such a variety of spaces, with their own heating requirements, it made sense to use three boilers to create different zones using a smart thermostat, addressing these needs simultaneously.

For example, the guests staying overnight may need their rooms at a warmer temperature in the morning while getting ready, whereas the dance floor would need to be kept at a cooler temperature for maximum comfort.

Fluctuating Demands

The three LCB700 boilers ensure the venue can effortlessly meet their high-demand periods without compromising on performance. Installing multiple condensing boilers rather than one large output boiler also increases the turndown ratio and improves the modulation capability for the boilers, ensuring more energy-efficient heating than using one boiler.

Future Proof

Dewsall Court were able to future-proof itself against any potential technical issues by always having a backup on-hand, thanks to the boilers being installed as part of a parallel boiler system, which are able to communicate with one another to maximise efficiency and hot water delivery.

Historically, having one single boiler meant that the venue was left without heating and hot water in the event of a breakdown, which is a major issue in the hospitality sector.

Installing multiple condensing boilers means that, although they are traditionally designed for domestic properties, when used in a parallel boiler system, they offer a commercial-level solution at a fraction of the price. Parallel boiler systems enable the boilers to communicate with one another, allowing one to operate for a longer time before the others take over.

All-in-all, installing three LCB700 Blue Flame Oil Regular Boilers at Dewsall Court has allowed the owners to not only improve the property’s energy efficiency, but protect themselves against potential disturbances in the future due to mains outages so their venue can continue to run at 100% on all-important event days.
